124 250d Auto box problem?

I have just got a 1988 250td auto and apart from thinking this is slow! it appears to run well, i have just realised (after 2K) that it does not want to change down to 2, it will change down to 1 or 3 (kickdown) at relevent speeds but not 2, If you are in 4 and kick down it will go into 1 if at that speed or 3 but 2 seems to be a no no!!

it changes up smoothly using all gears with little flairing, and will go into 2 manually by the selector! fluid level OK

any thoughts?

I suspect there were 2 problems one was lack of vacuum caused by the metal pipe out of the vacuum pump, It appears to have a ceramic? filter up the inside, a 1/32 drill bit soon sorted that! But the main thing was the bowden cable adjustment. It took 1/4'' of adjustment, and now Kicks down to 2nd and changes down under load....
