124 aux drivebelt tensioner...

Sounds a little noisy in that area on cold start-up on my E300D. Or could this just be the damper? any ideas how long they usually last?

Pretty normal. The damper has a bonded metalstik bush at the top that tends to rattle. You can replace it or cut a thick rubber washer from a piece of pipe and put this between the damper & block. This quietens it down well

Most of the racket is tappets & diesel rattle till the engine warms up
