To carry on from the 124 ECU related misfire threads -

My E280 suffered from a misfire which seemed to be due to a blown headgasket. SS motors replaced the HG but the misfire was still there. The ECU was the problem so they sent it for rebuild. £350 later the car is back on the road and all is ok.

So to those of you having the misfire and evidence pointing towards the ECU - mine is now cured with an ECU rebuild.

It taught me something else too - having not had the old girl for 2 months now, it has reminded me what an amazing car the 124 is and incredible VFM too. I regularly drive cars costing 100 times more but they are in no way 100 times better.

I thought mine had gone and I found these folk, cheaper than all the rest:

www.carelect.demon.co.uk

This is the email reply I had from them:

The KE-Jetronic ECU's can be usually overhauled, subject to inspection, and the cost is £145.00 plus VAT and return delivery.
If sending ECU in please enclose contact details and a copy of this quote.
We will test the ECU before doing any work.

I recommend Avilec (carelect.demon) as above, they have repaired 2 ECU's for me when others have deemed them unrepairable or have been unable to find faults, not cheap both times they were around the 270 to 350 mark, but the repairs have lasted, and good quality work is seldom cheap but often economical long term. Both on E320 124's.
One was the normal misfire following wiring breakdown and shorting of the coils, the other was corrosion in the multi connector requiring a complete connector, some 48 or so connections.

And I am very impressed with my W124 E320 VDO HFM-SFI ECU rebuild (for £350) from www.carelect.demon.co.uk on the Isle of Wight too -and they gave a 2 year warranty.
They also give the Merc part no. of the repair section for the 6 cylinder HFM engine wiring harness around the cylinder head - A 202 540 6081. Too late for me as I've already replaced the whole harness, but probably useful for someone who is trying to track down this elusive part and keeps being informed that no repair sections are available, and that only a whole loom is available.
