Has anyone else had a leak from the filler neck pipe that is welded to the fuel tank? ( I know its that problem that all te mercs get with age). If you have can you tell me what you did to rectify and please dont say bought a new fuel tank. Am looking for a solution to this and not wanting to spend a fortune.

Hi

After wifes 124 got the MOT last week i decided to waxoyl it underneath last week and while wire brushing around the diesel tank where the filler tube goes in it started to leak diesel. Ended up having to take the tank out and weld it. That is light metal only possible with a lot of small tacks overlaid with weld once it was thickened out a bit. Got it sorted in the end.
NEVER ATTEMPT WELDING A PETROL TANK!!!!!!

Frost Auto at www.frost.co.uk sell the tank sealer also available from the
Complete automobilist, Huntingdon..

I did My Rolls Royce tank in 76 and it was still perfect when I sold it in 2001.
It is a plastic seal in liquid form, you just pour it in the tank (tank off) and rotate it it round and round till it is all gone.

JB Weld epoxy from Halfords.

Mine had several pin holes around it. I repaired it with JB Weld... about £10. I did it in situ, after running the tank almost try then jacking that side up so the petrol sloshed to the other side. Clean it thoroughly with a wire brush all round (its not hard to get at) until the bare metal is bright, then seal very carefully on each visible pinhole. Once each hole was sealed I applied a thin coat right around the pipe and after it cured i sealed it with a tar based sealer. It took an hour to do and has held form for 6 months now.

I don't know what the outcome of this was. All I know was that we agreed to meet at my place on Sunday for me to do the job for him. 5 Hours of waiting later I went home. Not well pleased, but hey, thats life.

You have my thoughts with you on this one, 55 years of servicing, and some folk are just without any thought or care for anyone. The hours wasted for people who do not swow up. At least now I can pick and choose what I want to do, and in some cases I can say no thanks, try some one else.
