 I have the tools to remove the binnacle but have heard real horror stories about cracked lenses etc is this a myth or reality as there is bulb out and the taco face is on the skew and its driving me mad but I dont want to payt he stealer £75 for doing the job - albeit they take the risk..

Any advice greatly appreciated

Most people can push it out from the rear, mine was stuck and it wanted quite a push, there is room to get your hands both sides (not at the same time:D ) It can be very tight, once it starts to come its easy.

Dont forget to buy a new bulb first, they are MB special.

I have the tools but never used them. Once its out you can remove the outer case to get to the taco they are a plug and screw in.

Looking
I've done a few with the tools - so long as you're careful it's OK - getting it back in is probably harder!

Malcolm has said it all but here's a video to help:

I was told that the cracking glass is quite common so MB actually supply replacement screens if the worst happens. The dealer said something abut £50 in the case of the E class. That said, I got the binnacle out of my E without tools and without damage. As Malcolm says, it takes a bit of persuasion to start it, but once moved, it's quite easy.
