I've recently bought a 1999 E320 estate fitted with a splendid MB removable towbar and fold-out socket with 13 pins, of which only ten appear to be connected to anything - leaving 11-13 blank. The garage that sold me the car also supplied a 'Y' connector to link this single socket to the two plugs on my 1996 caravan (12N and 12S), and while all the road lights work fine I cannot get any supply through to the fridge to keep the beer cold while towing.

Has anybody out there managed to resolve this problem? My old twin-socket 300TE had a split-charge relay to the caravan battery, and something similar feeding 12v to the fridge.

I'm totally useless at DIY, and the local MB dealer seems pretty clueless about trailer wiring, so I'm a bit stuck. Any ideas?

You're right, landover, I should have responded earlier. Thanks to all for the suggestions - haven't had time to try any of them out yet, but I will.

Thanks for the wiring diagram Landover - exactly what I needed. A quick check of the fold-down socket reveals that MB have left three pins completely blank, and guess what - they're the three I need! I've found a local towbar specialist up the road so guess I'll have to see what he can do.

Thanks again to all.
