My 300TE is due for a 144K service, and I have had 2 quotes so far. One from Andy (cheers!) and one from MJ Warner in Gloucester. Andy has quoted me some £50 less than my dealer,  a reasonable saving. However I am faced with the drive to Brum, leaving the car all day and wandering the streets of Brum till it is completed. Anyhow, still not decided which way to go but bearing in mind that Brum is a 240 mile round trip and a tank of fuel is around £50, it looks like the dealer will get the business...

On to my real reason for this post. I want to cut down the cost as much as possible by supplying the parts and consumables for the service. As the 144K service is a biggie, what parts are required and exactly what does this service entail? I can then source the parts and consumables I need. I was charged £15 once for washer fluid that the car did not need and later found the unopened bottle behind the seats!... BTW, Andy is a much more pleasant person to deal with than Warners, so do not let my penny pinching put you off using him. He and his team offer a valuable service if you are willing to travel....Or live in Brum.

Hi,

I am supprised that the difference between our quote and the dealer is only £50. Although I would like to point out for those reading this. That our service includes a little more than the dealer would give for the same money.  Also remember that any other work which be required would be charged at the dealers going price what ever that may be? Also it should be noted. This maybe the most significant. With my business you the customer are not just a number. Hence my participation on this forum. I would like more of you to visit admittedly. So you can put our service to the test.

Hi RSnake,
I have just paid a small mortgage for a 50k
service & intend to defray costs in the future.
Which routs are you taking regarding consumables, filters/pads etc. etc.MB parts or OEM??
I too have done my sums regarding visits to Andy & I share the problems with a day in Brum & my wife being let loose in the shops !!
regards
Ernest

144K mile service

The dealer is happy to let me supply oil, filters, pads, washer fluid, wipers, and such. However, I am tempted to fit non MB aprts where appropriate. One area I would not skinp on is oil and oil filters. Engine work is costly and I think prevention is better than cure! However, one area in which Andy Gale can beat the [pants off MB dealers in in personal service. As you say Andy, you do not trewat the driver with the contempt that most dealers do. As a driver of an older Benz, I am made to feel that I am dirtying the dealership with my 300TE. For example, they washed and valeted all the other cars in for work on my last visit. Our car came back as dirty as it did when it went in, only a small thing but it makes me suspicious.

The dealer quoted me £350 incl of VAT and parts. Not sure what he means by parts though? Andy quoted £260 + VAT. Then I have to add the cost of travel and the inconvenience of arraging a weekend around the service. If the quote was £20% cheaper, then maybe it would be worthwhile. I am sure that a lot of readers here run thier cars on a budget, just like me. I am not tight but if the car is gets too pricey tio maintain, it will have to go. That is the real world for you. I may well be selling the car before the 144K service anyway, as my wife cannot get used to the driving position and as a back pain sufferer, this is a big deal.

Regards,

Jim

Well I'm glad its not just me that has issues with (1) MB driving position (2) certain MB dealer's attitudes to grubby poor people sneaking in off the streets and wanting to be customers!

When I bought my Merc 4 years ago I was amazed at some of the high service charges, since the vehicle is so well engineered and relatively easy to work on. If you're not maintaining a full MB history on a newish car, I think there's a lot to be said for finding a decent mechanic to look after the routine work you can't do yourself (or don't want to) and an MB specialist for everything else.

I used a few expensive garages in the early days, but now general maintenace of my beast probably isn't any more costly than any other car.

Apart from that, I try and avoid my dealer... Seems to be a mutually agreeable situation!!

Andy, would ya get over here and open up in Dublin!

I recently contacted two of my local dealerships (SMAC Continental in Southend and Lancaster Lakeside in West Thurrock) as my 190E is due the 145k service, i was quoted in excess of £540 for this from both Garages as apparently this service is "the biggy". i e-mailed andy for a quote for the same service, and guess what, it came back almost £300 cheaper!!!!!!

Where the h*ll
do MB get their charges from? Its all those £15 washer bottle refills i expect.!

Hi Matt,

I glad you got an alternative quote. I was getting quite worried after reading "racingsnake" comments and quotes. I have built my business up on being very competitive to the dreaded dealer. This service is (144k) is usally when I get the mass defections. Give me a shout as and when your ready.

For any body else reading this. Give me a ring if there is any job you have been quoted for and its mega bucks. I am sure we can help. We have just fitted an airconditioning evaporator to a 140 S class. Dash out jobby. If you want to see what sort of savings we can offer. Ask the dealer for a quote on the above job. Then give me a ring.

Regards

Andy @www.mercedesservicing.com

PS, Don't let distance put you of. Ring me and see if there is any thing we can sort something out!

Andy,

What "comments" were you worried by? Was it that you could only beat the dealer by £50? If that is the case then call me and let me know the true saving I can expect from giving you my custom. As I have no experience of your "service" other thn the phone call from one of your colleagues, I have nothing to go on, you have not even offered me any of the other services you mention in other posts. I am talking about collection and "sorting something out" no matter what the distance. I would love to keep the car I have, run it for minimal costs and better still have a competent mechanic work on the car. If you think you can save me more than £50, then call me again. I would be happy to give the job, if the price was right.

Regards,

RS

Hi,

I would find an independent engineer.  For example,  my C180 is having a final drive rebuild.  Cost?  £380 in total;  MB want £1300 just for the Diff. I don't bother with Benz
