I’m about to fit 17” OE wheels to my CLK in replacement of 16’s so need a fresh set of boots.

A lot of the 245/40 tyres are XL. Just wondering if any of you guys are using these on your C Class or CLK and what the effect is on the ride? I don’t mind sharpening/firming things up a bit as being an elegance with a heavy diesel up front it is a bit ponderous… but not too much! I don’t want to ruin the ride and make it crashy.

(It has recent shocks, springs & aligned at wheels in motion so nothing wrong with the car)

Hankook V12, Rainsport 5, Toyo Proxes sport look good value in these sizes.

My CLK has uniroyal Rainsports on the front , they will be due replacement next year and Nexen N’Fera on the rear which I have been impressed with . I’ve also got the Nexens all round on the E320cdi , very impressed with them for the £50 each I paid for them .

Did you go for XL’s?

I have RS5’s on the front now, they look a bit under-inflated beneath the 2.7 litres of pig iron! (Not as bad as the RS3’s I had on my E300TD - I had people commenting I had a flat! )

Just worried that stiffer sidewalls will result in the rear of the car (little weight compared to front) crashing over every imperfection which will drive me mad though!!

I have a full set of RS5 XL on 18" on my W204, the ride is better than it was on RS3

Ooo pretty, I love that design of wheel.

Another thought! I have 2 identical sets of 17’s so I could in theory run the front 7.5j/ET37’s with 225/45’s on each corner. Then I could rotate for even wear and it’s common/cheap size. I would probably just chuck on a set of Michelin PS4’s.

Any reason in terms of handling etc not to do this? The current width at rear on the 16’s is 225.

If the 17's are staggered I would personally recommend you fit them as intended, staggered...... ;)

How's their grip in the wet? Is the sidewall construction too soft? Need to replace mine also and I'm torn between that and the toyo tires proxes.

As far as I've used them in the last 22 months, no problems at all..... Also very good in the Dry, and not noisy like some tyres I've had in the past.

No disrespect to your personally but I've watched this chap a few times and through personal experience with tyres, a lot of the time he talks a load of shite! And comes over as a right Tony Blair!

But I suppose if some people like watching him flex his muscles, (which he goes to great lengths to show off) it might be right up their street!

I fitted a set of the Rainsport 5’s in the end (not XL). They are quiet and comfortable. The car has always been prone to spinning the rears / flashing TC light pulling away uphill in the wet (even with new Goodyear EF grips), that’s gone.

Had alignment at wheels in motion. It feels VERY stable and tight.

I found the RS3’s sidewalls to be a bit soft under the weight of the diseasel in my E300 - the RS5 seems sturdier.

The RS5 has now replaced the RS3 and is better in every way, I have put 2 sets on my car and they are brilliant, wouldn't even consider a Toyo. Their wet performance is incredible, never known a tyre so stable
