Hi folks.

My H reg 190E 2ltr is losing water. Due, I think, to the water being pressurised and being forced out of the radiator cap. I have flushed rad and block 'till the water runs clear, can't find any leaks and can't see any oil in water or water in the oil.

Starting engine from cold and driving for about two miles the hoses are very hard and on releasing the cap water pours out, under pressure.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Dave

I presume that after two miles the water isn't hot enough to cause the kind of pressure you are experiencing. Otherwise, this is normal behaviour. However, if the pressure cap is holding the pressure, it can't be that high. What happens as the engine gets properly hot, does the cap vent hot water?

The fact that there is no oil/water contamination does not rule out the head gasket. Could also be a cracked cylinder head, though that is not common on this engine. Looks like you're going to have to pull the head off and have it checked.

Before reaching for your chequebook, I would check that your thermostat and waterpump are working properly. I would then check very closely for even the smallest sign of a leak.

Mine had similar symptoms and I evemntually found a hairline crack in the thermostat housing that was only just visible when the engine was really hot. No real leakage but it was loosing pressure, thus allowing the coolant to boil over.

If water is escaping through your radiator cap then it could be nothing more sinister than the cap itself. It maybe worthwhile changing the cap and thermostat as a matter of course as they are both very reasonably priced.
