190 fuel seperator......broken...do i really need it

hi,

just got this 1988 190....thought i would do service.....but after struggling to get the oil filter off i broke this plastic thing!!!

This caused a fuel leak....the unit was attached to the carb......with three hoses...fuel in....fuel out to carb.....and another which i really have no idea where it goes. I have since found out this is a fuel seperaror by MB

Does any of you good chaps know if i can just forget about this third hose and just stick a straight filter in???????
