The first time that  i brake to a halt after starting there is an awful grinding that can be felt through the foot brake. This is worse if there is slight steering aplied. In my opinion it sound like gears but does anybody know what it could be. 1990 2.0 Auto

Sounds like corrosion on the discs. This is worse if the discs are worn. Apply a little lock may identify worn wheel bearings.

I'd whip the wheels off and check the state of the discs and pads. Check the bearings too. Even if the whole lot is dodgy, it shouldn't take a second mortgage to sort it out.
