For the last couple of weeks my 1989 2.0 auto 190 has been shuddering through the steering wheel at speeds from 55 through to 75. It is steadily getting worse and I have had all the wheels rebalanced and checked the wheel bearings. It really shows on more uneven roads and I suspect it is either shocks or steering column bushes wearing.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks,

Bruce

A wheel may be damaged or have a flat spot on it, particularly if the vehicle has not been used for a while or the vibrations have been allowed to continue for some time. I would like to think that the tyre fitter checked the tyre walls and tread for any irregularities. Try swapping with the spare.

I don't suppose it could be something to do with power steering.

Because your hands are on the steering wheel whilst you drive (I hope)any vibration may appear to come from the front. You could check the drive half shafts and propshaft for trueness. If they've taken a belt they can vibrate like hell. Check the propshaft bearing for play and of course the rear tyres. Balding patches would indicate that they are out of balance
