Hi,

I have a 1990 190E and the wipers have stopped working. At first they wouldn't work on the fast speed and now... not at all!

Could anyone advise if

a)this is a common problem?
b)where I could obtain a replacement motor at a cheaper rate than Mercedes (quoted £175-£195)?
c) is this an easy job to do myself?

Thanks in anticipation...

replacing the motor isnt THAT hard however be careful of the 'leaf catcher' that you need to remove, it is liable to split/crack during the process

i removed my wiper/motor in order to get at the blower heater motor underneath, and removing it wasnt that hard,

all you'll need is patience

heres what things looked like on my old 190 when i had the wiper+motor out

cheers and good luck

Changing the motor isn't that bad of a job. Its detailed reasonably well in the haynes manual and you should be able to pick up a second hand motor fairly cheap. The problem may be to get one thats not just as bad as your own.

You need to eliminate a few things though. First there are 3 main things that could be wrong - the stalk inside the car, the relay or the motor/linkage.

Suggest first stripping back a bit around the motor. Check with a multimeter that you have voltage going to the motor. 3 wires go into it I think, an earth (usually brown and yellow), a smaller wire that is the always-on feed to return the wiper to rest and then the last to supply power to the motor. If you have 11 volts there you should be OK for the stalk and relay. If you still suspect that its the motor, make sure that the mechanism isn't jammed up or siezed, do a search here on routine maintenance to the wiper mechanism and you get the details. It may be worth while depending on the condition of the mechanism to get the complete assembly in a scrap yard while you're at it.

Before you do any of this you will pull the relevant fuse and make sure that it isn't blown.

hope you get it sorted out.... I have every sympathy I have my own wiper woes although they are in abeyance at the moment!

You should be able to pick up a motor from a breakers for about £30,It should only take an hour to remove the old one and replace it....

Thanks to all for your help - I've been on holiday so have not had a chance to look at the responses until now.

I will have a look at your suggestions before I purchase a replacement and see what I find! I will of course let you know how I get on.

Regards,

Mark

I know this is a bit late but I would think the problem was in the stalk. the clue was the fast wipe stopped working first. I have the same problem with mine where I turn the switch the wrong way whilse driving using my mobile(before the law came in) this force the copper reeds apart but I manage to get it working on intermittent and single speed. I bought another stalk off a popular auction website but could get my steering wheel off to change it. I think I need a t40 spline tool to undo the steering wheel bolt.

Hi DIY Dan,

It was the wiper motor with mine in the end - the motor had seized. This is why I didn't notice any speed difference on the fast setting, as the motor was straining to move.

Not sure how I can help with yours though!
