190d egnition lock problem

I cannot turn the ignition key on my 190d 1987 i have been told the barrels knacked and have to strip out the entire front console and cut the steering lock off.
does any one know an easier way ie rip it out with a slide hammer
i tried drilling and the metals to hard for the drill bit.
