Hi,
I'm a newbie here, and having owned the car for 6 years, covering 62k miles hope to be able to share my (fortunately few) experiences.
The car is regularly serviced privately, and all parts replaced are genuine MB unless otherwise stated.
My problem,
Recently replaced plastic thermostat housing cap with alloy after it sprung a leak around one of the bolt recesses. I find it very reassuring that you can still obtain up-graded parts for a 14 year old car. Has now developed a leak behind the water pump (slight drip from that location).
Could this be the warning sign that the water pump likely to fail on this engine and should it be replaced, or is it just likely to be the gasket which requires replacement? At the moment it is not making any nasty noises which may indicate imminent failure.
Any advice on above greatfully appreciated.
A couple of faults and remedies I would like to share are;
Propshaft front coupling; 3 bolts sheared at approx 76k but still driveable. Repaired under warranty, caused by worn propshaft centre bearing creating play in the propshaft and thus stress on the coupling. Worth keeping an eye on.
Spluttering when damp or when idle for 2-3 weeks until engine warmed up; Previous owner had replaced ignition leads with Halfords leads. Tried the WD40 method for a couple of months then replaced them with a set of Beru leads from GSF, perfect.
Brakes binding; Contaminated brake fluid ruined 'O' rings in master cylinder (can you see me blushing?) New master cylinder fitted.
Throttle assembly broken spring; resulted in very light pedal movement ie. very little pedal resistance, and surging on slight pedal depression at any speed.
Spring hard to access but possible, under air filter housing. Stretched the spring and re-formed the hook on the end.
Hope the above helps someone.
Al.
