got loud whining coming from the front of my engine on my 190e. at first i thought water pump. i took the belt off and checked it but its fine. alternator is new and silent. it hasnt got air con. been told it could be the power steering pump? theres no play in the pulley and the level is fine. and the noise doesnt get any louder when steering or on full lock!
any ideas?

thanks

Why not make a stethoscope with a long screwdriver or the like, put the blade on to each component in turn, and the other end to your ear, you will then hear where the noise is comming from. be careful of the fan.

Coul be the pump drawing air in, my old porker did that, more so on cold mornings but the note would change as you turned the wheel to full lock, have you tried running without the belt fitted? just to eliminate any thing else, is there any idler pulleys on the belt system that could be noisy or the belt slipping.
