Hi guys

I've read numerous threads on idle problems afflicting different merc models now i'm asking you all for a bit of help to resolve my problems.

My car starts relatively easily and then idles at about 8/900 rpm, thereafter the revs seem to have a mind of their own and fluctuate between 500 and 2000 rpm whilst stationary. I have replaced the following at significant cost;

1. Idle speed actuator replaced
2. Spark plus
3. Injection nozzles replaced(x4)
4. Idle control valve was removed and cleaned
5. Injector manifold and air flow meter were removed and cleaned
6. Air intake temperature sensor replaced
7. Air Filter entire assembly replaced
8. Fuel filter replaced

The rough idling persists and now exhaust fumes can be smelt in the cabin. Fuel consumption is also terrible as the engine seems to be running very "rich".

Not being mechanically minded I am guessing that my next fix could be either to replace the inlet manifold gaskets or to replace the throttle switch.

Any ideas?

;-)

You could try the following, which would only take a few minutes and no cost. You seem to have covered everything else. If it doesn't help then you haven't done any harm anyway, and in the meantime others with more expertise than I will undoubtedly come in to help you.

There's a black plastic-like cover about 5" x 3" on the side of the throttle body which uses 4 'security' torx screws to prevent 'unauthorised' access. (These screws have a pin in the centre so you will need the torx bits with the hole in the nose to undo them). Inside is a very lightly sprung (or weighted) electronically controlled lever 'gizmo' which on mine was sticking and affecting the tickover in all sorts of ways. A squirt in the innards with magic WD40 did the trick! This was around 7 months ago and no problem since.

Good luck.
