hi people. new to this site.
i brought a 190e 2.0 auto few months ago to smoke around in whilst i was building my other car. i never realised how great these cars are! anyway now ive moved my other cars on im looking to spend some money on the mercedes.
looing at a workmates 300e 3 litre i wondered how easy it would be to put in a 190e? mounts look the same bellhousing looks the same?
ive been told all i need to change is the ignition control unit and the fuel pump relay for 3 litre ones and it should run?
anyone ever heard of this being done?

any info would be much appretiated.

Alright Joe,

A 190 was my first Merc too, I bought it as I wanted a cheap diesel to do some miles in. Great little car, paid 700quid for it, put 10 thousand on it, 4 new tyres and an MOT (straight through) and sold it for £850! That was me got the Merc bug.

Anyway, I can see no reason why it shouldn't work, as the engines (and gearboxes) were shared between the w201 and w124, other than will the engine physically fit in the engine bay? (should do, were the 2.6-16s 6cylinder?) I would think you'd have to use all the engine electrics from the w124 though.

There's a bloke on here who's putting a v8 into a 190! I think his website is www.124works.co.uk

Good luck my son, keep us updated.

I think the 2.6's were six pot but only 12 valve not 16. Disproportionate number of valves!

Good luck my son, keep us updated.

 Ahem, how stupid of me! I was so busy reminiscing about my 190 that I got mixed up between the 2.6 and 2.3-16

Did Merc not make an engine with 2 and 2/3 valves per cylinder then?:D

3 litre will fit into a 2.6 but not a 2.0. Lots of differences to make the 2.6 fit as it was not designed to do so and was built as a BMW 325i competitor. The whole front is different beneath the bonnet (slam panel etc) and the steering column and linkage are different along with the pedal box!!! You will notice the difference in driving position between the 2 and the 2.6 as the column is lower!!!

Very interesting, I did'nt know that. Shame, as this could have made a nice conversion. I did once see a 3.2 AMG based on a 2.6 103. Bet that was fun.

The 3 ltr will go in a 190 but you have to cut out and replace the front slam panel for that of a 2.6. The other thing you have to be aware of, with the increase in potential power and speed, make sure you can stop. The other thing to do is to change the front springs and torsion bar. Extra weight on 190 springs isn't conducive to safe driving. And yes I am or should I say have put a 3.8 V8 in a 190. Its is not easy to do, but hey, if it was then everyone would do it.

thanks guys. i knew about the slam panel as the radiator in the 2.0 sits behind it and in the 2.6 it sits infront/inside the panel. im gonna have a proper look at the 300e and compare properly. as long as i can get the engine in the bay without hitting anything i should be ok. just a matter of messing bout changing looms!
front has just had new bilstien shocks and uprated springs and already got grooved and drilled discs and greenstuff pads.
v8 now thats sounds interesting! i miss my old v8! best sound in the world!
