190E Auto gearbox Problem

hi all first post here from me

i have a problem with my 190e auto box and was wondering if anyone had an idea of what it could be before it goes to the garage.

it all started before xmas when the gearbox would not engage gears, only for me to discover it was lack of fluid in the gearbox. So i put some in and no problems until this morning when it went again, i thought it was fluid again but had no leakpatches on the drive so i checked, However it was a bit low but not serious but it still wont engage and now i have a worrying whining noise when you put your foot on the gas.

so if anyone has an idea what it maybe you might just save me a lot of time and money if i had a small possibility of what it is

Hello Dave and welcome to the forum. Many things could be at fault here, anything from a valve block to a pump. I think it is better that you go to a gearbox specialist rather than a normal garage, there are some good ones in this link that do good honest work.

it turns out that on first diagnosis that it maybe down to a collapsed filter meaning no oil pressure when running warm hench the reason that engaging gears is non exsistant. a service of the gearbox im told should fix the problem (£120.00 + Vat) However if this does not cure the problem it could be a rebuild of the box that could potentually cost £900.00 + Vat so im hoping its the first one or ill be looking for another car.
