Hi All

Well no sooner does my '89 190E 2.0 Auto become my primary transport does it stink the place up quite literally.

In P & N all is well, no smell. In D & R there is a smell of burning. I checked the gearbox oil, its red & smells sweet, but it is well below the min mark. Will a low level of oil contribute to a burning smell from the box once its engaged? Or could this be something more sinister?

Obviously I will be topping the oil level up & hoping for the best, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this & what their thoughts / experiences of what could be causing it were?

Thanks in advance

Difficult to say. I would change the fluid in the box and torque converter and renew the gearbox filter and gasket as a starting point. Low oil will not help at all.
The total job will only cost £25 with bits from Euro Car Parts and take about 1-2 hours. Clean freah oil and a clean filter are critical to a smooth gearbox.
