I have recently bought a 1990 190E with about 95k miles as a general runabout and after about 700 miles am generally pleased though it has a couple of little problems that I am hoping someone here will be able to help with :-

1) After starting the engine and driving off there are some strange noises when pressing the brake peddle and after about 30sec the ABS light comes on. Am i right in thinking this would be a front senser issue and it just needs a clean ?

2) When in top gear and cruising along if I lift off there is a noise from the back somewhere (diff ???). It is not there when accelerating.

3) Finally when I put on the heater fan it makes an annoying squeaky noise. Can this be easily sorted or do I just live with it

After a few years of Citroens it is good to be back in a Merc

hello and welcome.

Re the diff, if you get a whine when you back off the throttle, that is the pinion bearing, could stay like it for ever, may get worse,if left to long the whine might always be there owing to the wearing of the gears.

The heater fan bearings can be oiled.

Does the ABS light come on when the car is still.

Thanks Malcolm

The ABS light only comes on after driving for 30 seconds or so and only if the brakes have been touched a few times (strange boinging sound can be heard)

I will investigate the others

Cheers

To add to what Malcolm has said - see my post about greasing the end of the heater fan bearings and this will remove the squeak.

Also, clean your ABS sensors on the front hubs and make sure you clean the rings inside on the hub. WD40 works well for cleaning. If the sensors need cleaned ABS can come on at low speeds usually when stopping at a junction etc. There may be another issue with the ABS but you may as well clean the sensors first and see what happens, then report back.
