I have had my 190e a few months now, excellent car! It’s got 172k miles on it and it’s a 2.0 litre petrol automatic. Having just paid £1000 for a completely new reconditioned engine when the crankshaft went I am still experiencing a rather annoying worrying problem which I have had to bare with before and after the new engine. However the problem is lesser now with the new engine, the last couple of days this problem has increased and I suspect it is slowly coming back more. This is why I am here now asking for all of your expert advise as to what to do!

The problem is as follows:
After having accelerated very hard up to around 50 mph or greater and then slowing down very quickly the car once it has slowed down to its lowest gear and the revs are just under 1000 rpm will switch of. Restarting can’t be done unless I give the car gas and once the peddle is released, no matter how long I may have been holding it down the car will continually switch of when I let go. I then have to drive around with my left foot over the brake and hold the gas to idle revs around 1000rpm while slowing down to a stop so that it doesn’t cut out. After driving around like this for around 10 minutes the car will eventually begin to idle by itself at around 500rpm, struggling and another 10 mins later it will get to around 700 rpm. It only regains idling at 1000rpm like it is supposed to once starting it the next morning and even driving it around hot providing I don’t rag it.

Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!!
Chris

hello mate

mine was cutting out when starting from cold so i adjusted the idle speed using the screw under the airbox on the left hand side if your looking at the engine from the front, hey presto it doesnt cut out anymore.

if you adjust yours to idle at 1000rpm it might be a cheap & quick solution

Saw this posted by Pentoman ages ago on another 190 thread:

For idle problems look at:

Coolant temperature sensor (4 pin at front of engine)
Fuel shutoff switch (on throttle linkage)
Throttle position sensor (Built into bottom of throttle body, 3 wires)
Idle Control Valve (Right side of engine as you look in, 2 pin plug, a clean sometimes helps but sometimes you've just gotta replace it)

Hope this helps. If all else fails bite the bullet and pay a dealer or MB specialist £100 or so to check it.

No - I cut and paste stuff into a merc tips file I keep. Do a search though like "190 idle" or cut out and see what comes up.
