Hi all,

Have been reading the forum for some time, and now have 2 questions to put out there!.

It's a D reg 190e in quite good condition except for Alfa Romeo servicing in its past life ......ouch!

Yet on a quick examination around the car they seem to have used genuine parts on most of the regular items so I assume the other stuff is also (dis, rotor, cap etc)

Ok this is the problem - no sound proof under hood, and a very anoying booming from under the car in most driving situations other than low low revs.

Also it becomes worse around 3k revs (probably due to power band around there).
Now I and a garage have checked for exhaust leaks and found nothing except a black ring on my hands when I tested this ...

The only thing I can surmise is that the down pipes and centre box have become very thin and are transfering the sound too much now.

Any ideas would be welcome - oh yes, according to the tappy noise from the rear cylinder, I think I may need to get the valve lifters changed at the very least (mileage is 90k now) or is this likely to be a complete head rebuild via cam shaft and the rest?

Newxt problem is the difficult starting - takes a lot of turning over to start and then can't keep the revs - almost like auto choke is not happy ??

Any threads would be welcome :)

Great car otherwise - just would like to upgrade to a nice white later model - oh what the heck - ok would like a 2.5 hehe

It pays to do a search on this forum - finally found a thread about the noise ... so now worries.

According to the threads it seems probable that some cheap downpipes were fitted some time ago so this will be a first to do - especialy as they are rusted quite a bit.

Still having probs finding the starting problem info on a search though .... any advice ?

Oh yes - please advise me of a good MB service place down in deepest SE - Caterham, Kent way...

do a search ont the ovp relay-overvoltage protection relay on this site, usually located behind the battery behind the plastic cover- check the fuses on this relay-this may account for the hard starting problem.

i'm no expert but have read about the ovp causing starting problem, also the cold start valve could be at fault, also exclude the usual spark plugs,ht leads, distributor cap, etc.

Thanks Sunil,

will do a check and a carefull one at that.
But I guess if all else is ok, I will have to change the cold start valve... but like you say check everything that is usualy the culprit - plugs leads cap etc.

Sometimes the smallest little problem can be the cause (dirty connections).

Thanks

I used to have a 190e and found that putting an aftermaket exhaust on it ruined the quietness.  Check to see if you have a 'crap' exhaust.  If so a merc one may....MAY fix it.
