Hi guys,
1985 190e 2.0, FYI. I posted this on another forum so just copy/pasted :)

A few little niggles have came up, if this is all that's wrong with the car, for the price I paid I'm more than happy, but I want to fix them regardless:
1. The window wiper seems to "stall" on occassion.
2. When indicating, one of them (left I *think*, I'll double check) doesn't come up on the dash - but the lights are working on the outside perfectly.
3. I feel a bit daft here as I don't know if it's me not being able to figure out how to turn them on or if they actually don't work, but, the dash lights don't seem to work. I think I've tried all the obvious things but to no success. Can anyone confirm how these are supposed to come on? I thought it was the little knobs at the front of the dash - but those seem to be for changing the clock and resetting the odometer?

Anyway, are these all related through one of the fuses? Or have I just got three seperate problems on my hands?!

The wiper is okay, but it just seems to stick sometimes before moving like it should. It's better when its on fast - infact it doesn't do it, but if I do it once it seems to hesitate mid way.

The indicator light is annoying if nothing else.

And the dash lights are a must fix for me as I'm surrounded by speed cameras and do a lot of night driving. I've upgraded from a BMW Compact 1.6 so I feel like I'm doing 50 when I'm going 80 in the Merc!

Any ideas or confirmations much appreciated.

Thanks,
Stephen

The dash lights will only come on when the lights are on (any combination of lights). The rheostat is controlled by one of the 2 knobs at the front of the display, but I can't remember which one.

Trial and error will tell you. They either rotate one way or the other, and there are 3 further possibilities - pull out and rotate, rotate without pull push, or push in and rotate. Different MB models vary. I had my 129 for 2 years before I realized that to alter the clock (GMT to BST for example) you have to pull the knob out, rotate by about 20 degrees and hold - after a couple of second's pause the clock then sets off. When it gets to the time you want, let go.

If none of that works, it's back to fuses!

Trial and error has resulted in pure error, unfortionately! I think it must be a fuse. Anyone got an idea which fuse it is? Either that or I'm replacing the lot of them!

Your wiper/indicator fault could be a combination relay. Been a long time & I can't remember exactly where they are but......... probably in fuse box, at the very back (towards screen) At least the size of a fag packet or bigger. Jiggle it around with the indicators on.

I think you will find it is item 176 in the following link:

I had a similar problem on one of my cars and when I removed the said relay I noticed several dry joints on the PCB. A small soldering iron and a steady hand and I saved myself £80 or so. These relays can be obtained from breakers and I got a spare off ebay for abiut £2 in case I made a mess of soldering teh original.
