190e exhaust manifold / head removal

I'm trying to remove the exhaust manifold from a 2.0 190e 1992 from the cylinder head side - have all the nuts removed but one - the nut that hold the bracket for the engine oil dipstick. i keep shearing it - its gone down from 12mm to 11mm and still cant get a decent grip.

I had removed another stuck nut with a nut splitter, but because of the bracket I dnot have room to use that tool...

anyone know of any good tricks?

Why do all the manuals advise to remove the head with both manifolds attached? I had so much trouble getting the exhaust manifold released from the downpipes I have given up and am going to leave it attached...

They advise leaving the manifold on because it is so difficult to get off!

I ended up removing the manifolds rather than unhitching the manifold from the down pipe because the nuts on the manifold were slightly less knackered.

It is a horrible job, some of the nuts had to be split and then the studs replaced (removed by double nutting).

The nut you are stuck on had to be sawn through with a junior hacksaw blade that I had wrapped in tape at one end to make a handle. I then used an old chisel to break it off. It took a while but it worked.

Ah, Hadn't though of using a blade only - tried getting a little hacksaw close but it was a bit to tight to move... thanks for that!

Will I need to chok up the front of the exhaust underneath the car? (will it drop down after it is detached from the cylinder head), or is it stable enough resting on what looks like an engine / gearbox mounting bracket just below it?
