Hi
I wonder if some one can help me to find out what is wrong with my car. I live in Birmingham and am ready to bring my car to someone locally for help.

Every two three miles and the plugs go complete black then it wont start untill I clean the plugs again. I found petrol mixed into the engine oil once and changed oil. The mixture setting are ok. So what is the problem. Any help and advise is welcome. Car is 1987 190E Injection.
regards
Saj

How do yuo know the mixture settings are weak. It sounds like it is VERY rich.
One possibility is that the cold start injector is stuck on. Try disconnecting it and see if that helps. Alternatively take the car to Andy Gayle in Brum.

Hi Saj

If I lived in Birmingham I would be round to Andy Gayle like a shot.
Unfortunately, in this respect anyway, I live on the South Coast.

Good Luck

Hi Freinds
Thank your for responding. Could this rich mixture be due to weak rings or oil rings or it is definatley Cold Start Injection stuck on ???

I see the air cleaner area bit wet with the oil and it seems that the car has been spitting a bit of oil, but very little I think.

What is the address of Andy Gayle in Birmingham ? Is there any one else in Birmingham as well for this kind of help. Does any one know a parts supplier in Birmingham as well.

regards

If your worried about piston rings then this can be eliminated by doing a compression test the next time you take the plugs out. A DIY tester shouldn't cost you any more then a twenty. You are probably looking for as close to 150 psi as you can get. More importantly you are looking for even wear across the cylinders.

If all plugs are coming out equally black then chances are it is a carberation/injection problem although the exact samething happened to a motorbike I used to have and it turned out to be a naff battery/alternator which provided a weak spark. To test the spark shove a suitably sized screwdriver into one of the caps. Take all the other caps off their sparkplugs so that the engine will not start. Place the screwdriver near the head so that the shaft is 5mm-7mm away from anything metal. Get someone to turn the engine over and what the spark jump. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING WHILST THIS IS BEING DONE. It will hurt. If you can only get the spark to jump up to 3mm then you have a weak spark. Up to 7mm and it is fine. Problems may be leads, spark amplifier, distributor and coil.

rich 190

Sounds like its very rich to me if it was oil contamination I would expect to see high oil consumtion and lots of smoke. Best advise is get it looked at by a specialist. Andy would be your best man (sorry Andy)
