Pointless question i know, but its been bugging me for a while, why are the rear view mirrors on the drivers and passenger doors a different shape and size from each other?
I always think that the nearside door mirror is a better one than the driver's side because the cars were made for left-hand drive....maybe I'm wrong, but I've seen somewhere on this site that the screen demister works better on the passenger side for the same reason.
Who knows? ..........................Tony
I agree about the mirrors, i have an E250 why didn't they make them both the same size and shape, it makes the car look odd.
TonyD, your comment makes sense about the car being made for l/h drive, until you go abroad. I have just come back from the Cannaries, where they are still using a lot of 124's as taxi's, on the l/h drive cars the right hand mirror is the big (useful) one.
I had a good look at these, and i'm convinced that the fittings are the same as my offside mirror.
All i need now is to find a breakers in this country that is breaking a l/h drive 124 and i'll give it a try.

Bad news there Dave, If you use a left hand drive mirror then u will not be able to get the correct angle to see behind you.
Good views of the rear seats though.
And Matt, they should both heat. Check the elements with as meter to make sure you have a circuit
I replied to this a couple of days ago. Couldn't of got through. The reason the two mirrors are different. Is because there is two types of glass in them. One bends one way and the other bends the other. (Can't remember the technical names) Thats the reason MB uses two different shapes of mirrors. Both mirror glasses have (for this country anyway)heating elements in them. Have you never noticed that you never have to wipe them clear in the morning. On a really cold morning you can spot the steam coming of them. Thats why they are really expensive. Unless like Matt, somebody has put a cheap one in. So you see there would be no point in fitting a LHD mirror head any way even if it would adjust because the mirror is made for the LHD and so you wouldn't see correctly anyway.
PS. As a rule of thumb there is always a reason why MB do things in a certain way. The challenge is finding out why!!!!! (An old Chinese German man said it once I think)

I always thought it was so the mirror doesn't stick out too far over the pavement (and get knocked about) when parked on the street. I just replaced the n/s glass with one I bought mail order from 'The Garage'. There ARE a lot of non-heated replacement mirrors on the market though...as I have discovered in my quest for perfection! (Took ages to find a heated glass without getting a second mortgage!)
The mirror that dosent heat is the original as far as i know, i think its a fuse or something as the electric adjustment dosent work on it either. Hopefull its a loose connection or soemthing
