190e rattling from?

hi to everyone to start
i got a 1.8 1991 190e with 115000 on it which i got in a deal so no service history or anything with it at all but is in all round good condtion.i got a problem with a rattling noise(but not always) when in first pulling away and on into second then it goes away when underload into the higher gears(im thinking exhaust rattle but carnt see anything up anywhere it comes from the front of the car but is not engine noise from what i can see)and driving along ive also noticed a very very slight jirking(just enough to notice.im going to give it a good all over service i got good diy knowledge on cars but im graduating from a 1.6 peugeot 205 gti which i rebuilt completley in the summer but these mercs are a bit more daunting im looking for a few pointers as someone as bound to have these sort of probs somewhere down the line so im not going into the fault finding with a blindfold :? apart from this fault its great car.

knocking noise

Hi Bungel,
Like you I'm new to Merc ownership, however I find the 190 much,much less daunting than the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 I owned before it.
My suggestion to you would be to check the engine and gearbox mountings for play.

HI bungel
Have you checked the front 'M' exhuast mounting bracket this is prone to rusting through letting the exhuast vibrate at lower RPM's
Its the mounting that secures the exhaust to the gearbox.


Also if your car is fitted with a cat this can start to breakdown and rattle.

If its any of these two I hope its the 'M' bracket as the Cats are fusking expencive.
