I've recently bought a 1989 (1990-model) 190e 2.0 RHD which I'm really pleased with.

I've managed to correct the few little niggles but for the rear passenger side electric window, it's just a mystery to me.

This is what happens:

There does not appear to be any power to the switch in the rear passenger door and therefore the little bulb does not light when the dash lights are lit. I would expect power there...I've always been tought that the most likely cause of an electrical problem is a damaged component but they all seem fine...could there be a break in the wires somewhere? There are a pair of grey blue wires that make there way between the switches but the only live I can find is a red wire at the switch between the front seats.

Here's a funny thing - There appears to be some connection to the check strap and the electric window in the drivers side rear window as when the door is one one of the check strap's positions the motor does not operate but will do between them (I initially suspected that it was the interior light wireing that was governing the window but I've rulled this out). It has occured to me that this may be the cause of the problem with the passenger side...my thinking being that the wires on the drivers side rear have become entangled with the check strap workings causeing a short that efectivley stops the live from reaching the passenger side rear window. Cause this idea is pap if the windows are not linked.

This is what I've checked:

1. the switches are both working as I've swapped them with others
2. the motor is working as I've replaced it with a good one (the original one was dead if that sheds any light on the possible problem).
3. the relay is working fine

My questions are

Is the drivers side rear door check strap thing normal?

Do any of you have any ideas?

I've done my best to explain the problem but should you have any question please contact me kip@cwgsy.net

Oh well there you go...keep smilin

Kip :)

The 190 is notorious for frayed rear window wires and usually when the wire passes through the b pillar and down the "accordian" tube.

Thanks for that

I take it the "accordian tube" is the rubber sleave that contains the wires between the door and the b pillar.

I'll strip out the interior door panels and attempt to rewire next weekend.

I take it there's no connection to the check strap and the electric motors and therefore the drivers side rear window's wiring is also on the way out

The check strap thing is a quirk not Mercedes engineering...
