I have the entire engine out of the car and I have the head seperated. Is there anyway I can test the tappets to see if they are bad with the head off ? I thought I had a rod knock, but after taking the engine apart it seems it might be the tappets. I can move a couple of the tappets quite a bit and the others are tight. Am I supposed to be able to move the tappets with the head off? Cause some of em have tons of slack and the others dont.

I have a 1988 190E 2.3

Thanks,
- Steven

It would depend on the position of the camshaft lobes whether the valves were open or closed if they have been open for any length of time the resistance from the valve spring would compress the tappet squeezing the oil out of them resulting in you getting free play in them. You would really have to start the car Then check the ones that the valves were shut on by pushing down on the tappet as there should be no play in them if they are filled with oil .

Replace the lot if I were you, about 65quid. Also valve stem seals

How easy is it to replace the tappets? One of mine needs replacing (sticks like mad on and off) and, like has been said, i might as well replace the lot.
