I have a 190e 1994 L manual. It has problems starting from cold, I called the AA, after checking a few items such as filter, alternator the patrol came to the conclusion that my engine gets flooded and thus causing the problem. He pulled out the fuel relay from behind the battery. He examined it and said it looked fine. He then asked me to depress the throttle and attempt starting whilst he did something near the fuel relay switch area, this enabled the car to start. However the next day it refused to start.

My qn is what do you think he did which enabled the car to start whilst i had the throttle depressed? also do you think i simply need to replace the fuel relay or is there a problem with the injectors etc?

many thanks

Having worked as an AA patrol for the last 20 yrs I would guess he'd have been diconnecting your fuel pump relay so that as you keyed up the motor it would burn off the fuel already in the cylinders without injecting further fuel thus clearing the flooded cylinders. There is obviously an underlying issue to be solved could be as simple as spark plugs u/s through to HT probs coil(s) or worst case ecu or sensor issues. With the modern car if it does'nt fire up straight away it continues to inject larger amounts of petrol for cold starting which quickly floods the cylinders and unlike in the old days of manual chokes on carburettors the driver has no control over this.

My guess would be your looking for a weakness somewhere in your ignition

many thanks for your response, I need to start the car to get into a garage.

How do I disconnect the relay, do I need to physically take it off and then put it back in once started? or can i disconnect whilst it is still on

See my reply on the other engine section about this. It's probably a dodgy fuel pump relay or OVP relay.

Just pull the fuel pump relay or better still fuse out of it's socket and see if it will start then, it'll only fire for a short time till the fuel in the cylinders burns off. I've sometimes had to pull it out and push it back in quickly several times whilst the owner cranks the motor. If the engines flooding it will NOT be a faulty pump or relay.

If the fuel pump relay was faulty then presumably the car would not start?

My 1989 300e is doing the same flooding problem.
If the fuel pump relay is removed the car will run for a few seconds until it burns all the fuel in the cylinders.
Then when I put the relay back in it floods.
So if its not the relay or the pump then what could it be?

Sorry I forgot to post back here.

To check the fuel pump relay ,take it out and put a jumper wire between terminal 15 and 87.

Turning on the ignition you should hear the fuel pump run and prime,if it does not it could be the pump.
Many people run the cars with no relay, just using the jumper wire.

Thanks Ultymate for that important info, I always run out of words when I post and I asume that people would put in a new relay before driving.

I am always doing this, I get so wrapped up in the faults.

Regards and thank you, Malcolm :D :D

102 injection engines used to blow an air pipe off the bottom of the fuel distributor - very common. Does it run OK when started, if so, forget reading this as I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Any idea where this air pipe is? I suspect that this may have happened to mine, but can't seem to locate it.

Thanks

Dave
