Hi,

i just bought a W108 280SE 3.5 1971. i bought it in Lyon and drove it back to Ireland. Bodyworkwise and mechanically she is in tip-top condition. she was owned by the same person for 31 years, has a full service history and has just passed the french MoT. i have only two questions/queries that prople might be able to help me with:

1. there is a leak through the lower windscreen seal on the left. it mightn't have been a problem in a garage in France but it is a nightmare in wet ireland. i am considering one of two solutions: my own bodge of peeling back the seal and injecting some water repellant silicon sealant or taking it to an autoglass shop and asking them to put on some 'magic' compound the may use on a day to day basis. Any comments?

2. The car came without rear seatbelts and i need to get them fitted. i have read on a thread from 2001 that there is a lug covering the attachement points for the original option of rear belts under the back seat. i can't really use it as a family car until i get the belts fitted (car seat!) Can modern inertia belts be used?

thanks in advance

You'll need mounting points on the C pillar and on the rear self for 3 point seatbelts . I looked at a 114 coupe the other day which had inertia rear belts fitted. They looked old, so may have been factory fitted. It was an option back then. I just fit my (only) child seat in the front.

I think all the rubbers shrink in warmer climates. I had a 230s which was imported from South Africa and all the seals had gone. The silicon stuff works for a while, but doesn't last very long.

thanks very much for the help. i am finding it difficult to get somebody to mount belts......i think they're all petrified of being taken to court if they malfunction.
