if your going to buy the car dont let the sellers choose the mot station, YOU choose it, i would recommend an mot at a mercedes specialist or a main agent, hope this helps.

hi - Okay thanks for the comment, i will check with them to see who they are using and get some details. I actually believe the seller to be genuine because they have offered me an exhaust system for no extra charge, I was more concerned about any particular problems that could be related to this model etc.
I have a 1972 350SL manual in white. You dont say why you are buying the car and what you expect from it.
They are great fun to drive. They turn heads, my 18 year old cant wait until he is old enough to be insured for it, although I have recently learnt that friends of my 13 year old son apparantly call it the pimpmobile!
As long as it is a second car you will be fine, try to use it for everyday and I think you will soon be looking for something more modern. All the items that we think are essential are missing - no airbags, ABS, traction control etc etc etc, mine doesnt even have electric windows or central locking! You dont say how old you are, be aware that your friends will see the car as a mid life crisis.
Minus points - I am concerned that you think it is rust free, rust is a major problem, you need someone that knows what to look for. Secondly why do they have a spare exhaust? bought it just in case, I think not.
Do you have a garage? I struggled so much to get insurance without the car being garaged overnight (we live in south manchester) that we built it a garage.
Finally do you realise how much fuel it will use. Mercedes said 12 mpg in town in 1972. Thats about right for city use, nearer 20 mpg on a run.
I am not trying to put you off, just make sure that you buy this wonderful car with your eyes wide open.

Hi - The reason for the change of car is that I am tired of driving boring cars that don't have a personality though I have never been called a Pimp before!
Yes this is a second though I will use it everyday in the summer and I like the idea it has no electric's to go wrong. My daily miles are somewhere between 10-15 so if it did 5 miles to the gallon I would not be worried!
I also quite like the idea of having a mid life crisis, is 35 old enough for one of those?
On the mechanical side I have an excellent garage who specialise in classic cars so I live in hope that they will help me look after the car.
But thanks for the comments, fortunately nothing that I had not already had a good think about and I know this is not going to be the cheap option but lucky for me I am at the point in my life where I am not scared of running costs.
Cheers
Dave
ps. Insurance for parking on the street only £450 which surpised me though I quite like the idea of classic insurance but I don't have a garage!
The insurance sounds high to me, I pay £110, limited to 4000 miles a year. Is the car already classed as a historic vehicle for RFL, I think all 1972 cars are eligible.
I think that a convertible is fine for a mid life crisis, you could have taken a mistress instead, which is much more expensive!
Enjoy the car in the summer, the rush hour is more fun with the roof down. You didnt say what colour it is or how much its costing
Yes the car is exempt so to speak, I got the insurance down to £200 which would have been cheaper if I had a garage.
Car is like a navy blue with 94k on the clock, though the first 10 years of it's life do not have history but hey even if it was clocked 50k I would still be buying it!
Hi Dave,
I also have a 72 350sl and I dont give a toss what people think, running costs a bit high but sod it its worth it. Mine was a basket case when I bought it but still love it. Buy and enjoy
Regards
Mike
