Just bought a dizzy cap, rotor , leads and plugs for the above, as usual the cap has spring loaded fixing screws and my old one has the clip type. The lead connections seem to be smaller also. The whole set up seems to be too modern. So the question is, what model engine is fitted?
Thanks
Mike

I also have a 72 350 Sl with a 116 engine. I have also had trouble getting plug leads. In the UK the engine number is on the registration document, and I am aware that two different distributors could be on a car of that year and the full engine number is required to select the correct one. I ended up getting leads made up to sample - which was a lot cheaper than the £45 EACH that MB wanted.

Hope that helps.

Mark.

Cheers Mark, got the parts through a trade motorfactor so Im not sure if an engine number will help but clarifies the mix up. Bought the lot for about £120 which I thought was reasonable.

Thanks again
Mike

There is only 2 M116 engines with 3.5L engines 116.980, and 116.981 (69-72) that I know of.

I think the US 72 350SL was fitted with a M117.982, but this was 4.5L as was the 117.985 fitted in 76-80. From 73 it was called a 450SL though. M117.967 was fitted to US 560SLs, but I think the non US version was a different code and less different
The later 380SLs engine was called M116.960(81) - M116.962(82-85). so you may have got parts for this.
There are also other 116 engines:

M116.965 420sel 86-91
M116.963 500sel 84-85

Most of the above is US speciic, but maybe it will give you an idea on some of the different 116 engines.
