Hello everybody,

Some SL advice required?

First of all, I asked for some advice in buying an SL 2 months ago and received some great replies. I wasn't able to log in for a while (forgot my username) and so never had a chance to say thanks - so if you replied, thanks a million!

So I've now bought a 1977 450SL in metallic green with green leather. The bodywork is good but it needs work to get it through the MOT. First up it wouldn't start and we thought it was the cold start switch. That was indeed broken but the real problem turned out to be the accumulator and the pipes going out of it which had corroded. That's the first £550 gone!

Next, I need to have 2 calipers started which are binding. Hopefully they'll just need a spot of attention, rather than replacing. The exhaust pipes are leaking in 2 places and need replacing. The quote is coming out at around £450 for the pipes (the main box is ok.) They might be weld-able - fingers crossed - if not, any suggestions? Does this sound a bit steep?

The real problem is that it needs a new tyre which isn't available in the UK anymore. I don't have the type to hand (will be able to post it tomorrow if required) but the only place where they are made is Japan. There's a shipload due into the UK at the end of the month but it's a bit of a wait. Does anyone have any suggestions?

As you can tell, I have acquired a bona fine money pit. But it's a cracking looking money pit!

Many thanks, Dakers

Check the flexible hoses to your calipers. These can partially collapse internally leading to the calipers holding on.

That tyre size doesn't sound right. I think my 380SL had 205/65/14. Mind you, the 225s might be a better bet, but they are hard to get. Narrower tyres fit XR3s so there are more about!

Make sure you check the MB dealer for your exhaust, they can be surprisingly competative.

Good luck

Thanks for that.

We may well have to put 205s on. We can get 225s but only from Japan and they're £110 a throw. I'm told the older Toyota Supra is the only other car which takes them!

Many thanks.
