Hi there

I'm looking to buy a 1979 450 SL. Can anyone advise what fuel economy figures I can expect? The car has done less than 10k miles and I do mostly 'out of town' A road/motorway mileage. Also do these iron block V8s run on unleaded or do they need to be converted?

Thank you in anticipation of replies.

they can run on unleaded no problem

as for fuel, you need a specially reinforced wallet.
Our 500 if tickled up to 70 and higher will return 27mpg. Driven "normally", mixed M/way and town, 22mpg. Hammered, 14mpg.
I'm sure your 450 has the three speed box, which is even less economical in the extremes.
Hell of a lot of fun though.Enjoy

Unleaded OK.

My SLC was not completely senseless - Colchester to Beckenham, mostly dual carriageway but some deeply tedious town driving, about 10 miles out of seventy - I reckon kept under 70 mph it was around 23.

Thrashed in town (diff, as you need you need lots of road) like Myros says, in the mid teens.

IMO, worth every penny, especially when you are able to get about 3500rpm
in 2nd.....

There are lots of these cars running around on unleaded, do a search on unleaded fuel on these forums. As myros says fuel is not the best point, but I think you will find it worse than his, this being the worst point on the 107's

A 1979 car with only 10K. Was it part of a NASA space mission and just now returned to Earth?!;)
