1980 Sl107

I have just bought a 1980 450SL that has been laid up for 8 - 12 months. I have two issues with her.

1. The steering is vague and there is lots of excess play in the steering wheel. What is wrong?
2. There is alot of squeeking coming from the rear wheels. Intermittant but persistant!

I also need a good garage in West London. Somewhere that is good!

Do you mind me asking you what you paid... there is one of these for sale near me at the moment ('cept its a 380 I think)

few spots of rust here and there and needs a good valet but looks OK other than that,

I am pretty new to 107 maintenance but have a similar but smaller problem than you may have with the steering. I would think you either have a worn ball joint / bush or maybe you steering box needs adjusting/ replacing. I bought one of those workshop manuals and a Haynes book of Ebay and managed to establish the following. If you jack the car up in various configurations as described in the manuals you can pry and wiggle all the linkages to establish if any joints or linkages are loose or worn and inspect the bushes. My anti roll bar bushes needed replacing which has improved the problem a bit. I now have about <0.75" of play on the steering wheel which is not great but acceptable for an MOT. My next task is to check the steering box and adjust it to remove the play which I believe may be possible? but this may have to wait for another day .
