Hi,

I am looking to buy either a 280Sl or 300Sl with low mileage. Somebody told me that the body of the 300SL is less likely to rust, is that true. I have seen a nice 280SL in good condition but I do not want to buy something that will rust easy in the future. The car I will buy will have little use and will be kept under a cover outside.
Thanks

rust on 107

All the cars rust post 85 they were galvanaised which helps and had wheel arch liners. So the post 85 cars are mor durable, however on alll models check, rear arches boot floor, front wings, take hard top off and check hood well under hood cover. Do not discount a pre 86 car if it is perfect as in my mind they are better looking. The real main rust are is the bulk head so check very carefully by removing the plastic cover on the bulk head to see ito the heater plenum chamber. If you are allowed remove platic panels under dash board and check around heater from the inside and each far corner for signs of corrosion this is very expensive to fix and makes the car leak. My advice as always buy the best you can expect to pay 12-16k

Thanks

In addition to the above - ask to jack the car on all four posts seperately - the sills are another major drain point and rust through - sometimes these are bodged behind underbody sealant etc so if the jacking point collapses you know why!

Also lift the carpets and check for damp or signs of previous ingress. These cars can be tarted up quite easily to look nice (avoid all chrome wheelarches!) but hide all sorts of problems.

As with all Mercedes, interior trim isn't cheap to replace though there are plenty of sources to buy from.

I wouldn't buy an R107 if you were going to keep it outside, cover or not.

Hi Nick

Earlier model Mercedes tend to be better built than later ones but they do suffer rust if neglected. Sadly it is all to common to come across a Millenium (or later) model with rust problems. If you explore this forum you will find that rust is a major and popular topic.

Older Mercedes are not without rust their problems and you should closely inspect any vehicle before parting with your hard-earned cash. Treat them as you would any vehicle over 20 years old. My neighbour has an elderly 190 that is in surprisingly in good condition for the year. The external bodywork looks sound and the mechanicals seem fine too. However, it's always worth taking a closer examination of any vehicle prior to purchase. Mercedes is no exception.

Phil
