Not sure if this is the right section.....

Anyway The heater controls in my 1984 280Sl are causing no end of trouble, having stripped out half the dash and the heater blower I have discovered that one of the flaps that diverts incoming air either directly into the cabin or via the heater matrix keeps getting stuck.
By wiggling it about from under the bonnet the right hand lever will work 10 - 20 times and then it jams in the position to send air through the heater matrix.
Has anybody come across this and any fixes available without pulling the whole of the matrix, dash etc out.
The only thing I did notice is that the foam seals have long disappeared. Do they act like a hinge?

Any hints or suggestions gratefully recieved

Well just in case anybody else needs to know

  1. Remove heater box cover under bonnet
  2. disconnet heater hoses from valve (helps with access to Blower motor bolts)
  3. Disconnect wiring plug from resistor pack
  4. Unbolt resistor pack from bulkhead
  5. Remove four nuts holding heater blower motor, lots of WD 40 first, let it soak.
  6. Remove blower motor.
  7. flaps controlled by levers now accessible.

The flaps had jammed. Access is a little tight, but it is possible to work through this opening. I removed them, cleaned out all the debris, and remounted them - still working, touch wood
