I have just acquired a lovely 280se auto, with 120,000 mile on the clock and would like to sort out a few of the problems it has so that I may enjoy it fully. i was hoping that they would be easily recognisable as common problems, and that all you lovely experienced people might be able to help with them.

the first is that it rarely starts first time after a small journey, sometime needing quite a few tries before it fires up, but will run trouble-free after that, until i turn the engine off again. Maybe three or four tries, leaving for a few minutes between tries, then it will start almost on first crank. I have heard it may be vapour locks, especially after a short trip as this is when it is significantly worse, or a failing fuel pump?

Secondly, idle speed is fine in D or R, but pop it into N or P and the idle speed goes up to 2000 revs, until the engine is warm. This is leading to jumpy changes from reverse to Drive and vice versa, causing it to lurch, even if I hold the brake quite firmly.

I would really appreciate any help you guys could give me, also, how much is it worth? It is in a champagne colour, brown interior, 120K, very little rust (size of a 2 pence peice), excellent condition inside and out except for wear on the outside edge of the drivers seat, and previous owner is Dave Greenfield of The Stranglers!

Thanks in advance for your help!
