to quote the mercedes brochure at the time:

the 230te and 200te are fitted optionally, and the 300te as standard, with the multi-functional mixture formation and ignition system, so that they are already prepared for subsequent installation of the catalytic converter system, which reduces the emission of pollutants even further. a practical innovation as this means that initially - until lead-free petrol is readily avaliable - you can continue to use leaded premium fuel. this is a system which will be beneficial for years to come. after the catalytic converter and o2 sensor have been installed, you can change over at anytime from lead-free premium petrol (which gives optimum performance and fuel consumption) to lead-free regular petrol, if necessary. simply by turning a special plug. of course, if lead-free petrol is readily avaliable to you in the area where you will be using your car, you can also order your car with the catalytic converter and o2 sensor already installed.
