1986 420 SEL (U.S. model) Door-sill lighting

Hi; there are lights on the bottom of all four doors, which seem intended to illuminate the ground when entering the car at night; these seem to have overheated and melted, even to the point of damaging the plastic door sill trim. What caused this: leaving the door(s) open too long, or what? Can this be prevented by using a lower-wattage lamp, or?

Agree with above - it is likely PO wanted a bit more light and fitted higher wattage lamps - hence melt down!
