Hello, I've just bought the above car and would be grateful if anyone out there can let me know what I should do first. The Odometer says 64k but I think it's nearer 200k on the clock, what should I be looking out for?

I only bought it yesterday and did 100 miles in it coming home, it ran like a dream.

The only things wrong to my eye are a couple of dash lights out (heaters and auto box lights) and a tiny bit of surface rust in a couple of places

I'm going to get it serviced by a local bod rather than a dealership, what should I ask him to look out for?

I await your comments

1988 300TE JUST BOUGHT IT

I've been running a 1991 300TE since last summer 224,000 miles on the clock ,averaging 23-25 MPG .Having covered 4,500 miles with no real problems apart from a sticking Self-leveling valve. Local dealer helpfull and most genuine parts are cheaper than my old Peugeot 405 was for the same ie.discs& pads etc

300TE

If it has the mileage you think it has and does not have a dealer or MB specailist service history, then the fuel filter and auto box oil and filter will need replacing.

They usually get forgotten.

Thanks

For the help chaps, I've got it booked in for a service next week at a Merc specialist - all filters, oil and belts £128 inc VAT, can't be bad.

I will check they are replacing the petrol filter and the gear box oil and filters

If the £128 includes a full autobox lube service that is a very good price. If he is a Merc specialist I would ask him to give it a good optical bollicking while it is up in the air with particular attention to wheel bearings and suspension components/bushings etc.

About that dash light--

My car has a dash light that's out.

BUT IT ISN'T REALLY- it's a shorted wire-I have to thump the plexiglass a couple of times and it comes right on.

I mean, it isn't perfect...but it helps you see your gas tank guage and stuff. :D
