1990 260E Alarm -- Problem ??

Hi there,

I've just realised a 30 year ambition and bought a 1990 260E in superb condition - only 77,000 on the clock. Drove 180 miles home and for 4 days after - superb car.
Today, started the car and the alarm kept sounding. Factory fitted MB alarm but obviously no immobiliser as engine fires. Tried alternative key ( took me 2hours across town to get it ) and all seems well.
Question - how do I arm / disarm the system as not covered in any literature that I have? One of the keys appears to have a red tip but could be mistaken for spilt nail varnish ? No visible LED's or remote central locking so I'm sure it's dead simple.
Apologies for the long text but my ignorance here is overwhelming - just think that MB best ever motors - this one certainly is !

if it is a genuine red key, that is normally the key for re programing the system, but not sure right now on a 90 car. will come back later.

260 E alarm - is there an easy disable ??

Hi Malcolm,

Thanks for your prompt reply. The key shaft itself is not red but has a red spot at the end, well worn. The car seems ok today, just run my good lady to work and no alarm. Am I right in thinking that just locking the car sets the alarm, and is there any really easy way to disarm the thing totally eg removing a fuse or whatever ??
What a great website. It's nice to know that there are so many helpful and friendly people out there. !!!

Locking the car with the remote normally sets the alarm if fitted.

Thanks but there is no remote. I have 2 standard keys, one red-tipped. There is also no visible sign of alarm eg flashing LED. Until I tripped it yesterday I didn't even know it was there

I will take a look later in the day to see what system your car has.

You have the same system as that was offered on the 124 range, many were fitted by MB dealers. there were 3 options, each giving different levels. As far as I can see the only disarming was done on the switch by the LED if fitted, otherwise it is an auto reset done by using the right key. the alarm is set by either front door or the boot lock. Three keys came with car from new, one of those (red) is a service key that leaves the glove box ,etc locked.
Hope it answers all

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks very much for the info. Yes I have 3 keys and shall just have to try different combinations of keys / locks -- either I'll get it right or I'll have to move ( neighbours ). Morrisons' car park should prove a good testing ground I think - there seem to be car alarms going off all day and no-one bats an eyelid.
I'll let you know if I solve it. Thanks once again.
