1990 300 Sl convertible top

I am new as you know and my manual HAS STILL NOT come in the mail. When you put the top down does the car have to be NOT RUNNING and witch way do you push the button (To the front of the car or do you pull it back) Also i need to know how to put it back down . Does it take awhile for it to start working Thanks In advance
