When I press the brakes at low speed there is a loud howling sound and vibration which seems to be coming from the rear brakes. I am familiar with the screaching pads but this sounds more like a trucks brakes.
Any ideas

Ok the car is not the same but I had howling front brakes....unbelieveably loud! (much louder than normal screeching) on my W124 300D.

Turned out that due to lack of use by the previous owner, the brake pads had seized solid and as the brake disc warmed up and expanded, the pads and disc connected and got louder and louder.

Had one hell of a job to free it all off, but once freed, a new set of pads cured it....in my opinion always go with OEM pads as other manufacturers pads have a habit of squeeling after a period of time.

Has your car been laid up at all or has it had new pads installed recently?

Good luck

Sounds about right, has been parked up for about 5 months with only short drives every forthnight. Have stripped calipers numerous times on my 123s, usually the rear ones. Will have a go with these now, cant be much different. The only thing I noticed is that all the alloys are staying pretty cool even after a 20mile 60mph spin which seems normal and not what you would expect from brakes binding.
Thanks for the advice

Mike
