My 190E 1.8 has had problems for a while now. It idles at 2500 rpm and misfires badly when in town. On the open road it will go onto 3 plugs (or feels like it), then suddenly starts to run sweet again for a while. These things seem to only happen when the engine is warm. Runs great while cold. A mechanic told me that the idle control valve gives trouble on a lot of mercs, and he replaced it. This made no difference at all. If I unplug the valve, it slows the idle to 1300 rpm, but it still runs rough.

Also, I would like to verify that the mechanic has put the valve in the right way round. Does anyone know what direction the arrow should go i.e. Does it face towards the rocker cover or the sump/lower end?

Any help would be VERY much appreciated!
