Hi,

I have an opportunity to buy a 1991 260E auto with a years mot from a used car dealer. The thing is its £900 and this seems v cheap - what should i be looking for when i go to see it or should i stay clear at this price?

i have no idea of mileage or service history until i go to see it.

can you really trust dealers to not sell you a heap of junk if you don't know much about cars?

any help is appreciated!

The price doesn't sound too cheap to me. Remember, this is a 15 year old car with a 2.6 litre 6 cylinder engine. They are very nice and extremely well made, but you would need to keep on top of it and the chances of it being entirely trouble free is remote. With a 2.6 its not going to fall into the category of an economy car either, hence the dealer isn't going to have it fly off their forecourt. These are really for enthusiasts who don't mind the occasional bit of fettling from time to time.
At the very least, take someone along who knows a big end from a strut!

I had one as a company cr from new. Lovely. If you are not a competent mechanic don't even bother. From new, mine had: a welded up front suspension leg.. a new steering lock barrel and a new exhaust (I did 100k miles in 3 years).. Repairs in 1988 cost more than you are planing to spend on the whole car.

It went quickly: but not that quickly. Handling in the wet was so-so. I had several 70 mph power slides on diesel soaked roads.. Have you driven a BIG car before? In town? If not, forget it.. you'll be lucky to see 20mpg. Avoid manuals : they are horrible to drive. At 150k miles the autobox will be on its last legs if you are unlucky...Head gaskets go. The rear suspension bushes wear...

As these things do in every car, but at least with MB they do so much more slowly! I do agree though it's on its price - not cheap, so room to haggle.
