last winter (feb 2006) when the car was started first thing in the morning a high pitched squeal would eminate from the engine bay.this was traked down by april to a worn alternator, by which time it had stopped as i did not need the headlights/heater/heated seats...... i exchanged the unit 2 months ago and as winter has now closed in it has made no difference. ie the squealing is still there until the car warms up (up to 10 minutes). i am driving around without the heater and turn of the lights at the first opportunity. any guidence please

Normally the sqeeking is the belt slipping when started, I have only ever known this to be the case. If it also does it on full lock then it is the belt too lose

Loose or worn - either the pulley or belt. They're fairly accessible so should be easy enough to check.

You don't want a new alternator - they're around £500 new.

You dont want to put it into a dealers for 4-wheel alignment - they'll sting you for the best part of £300!
