This report comes from my 17 year old daughter:
I heard a little noise as I pulled up to the stop sign. I stopped. then the car would not go forward. So I backed it down the hill and parked it.

I took the pan off the trans and it looked like a metalic redish paint in the bottom. Small, little metalic flecks. Nothing else. thought I'd fill it back up and try it.

My concern is this: If it's something small, and it can be fixed easily then I don't want to trash it more by running it. On the other hand, the Mercedez dealer service rep told me that it would be $3,000 any way you slice it. That it doesn't make sense to repair it based on the value of the car and it would cost $2000 to take it apart to find out what is wrong and $1000 to fix it and put it back in.

Should I be looking for another car or another trans? Any advice on child rearing or the car would be helpful.

Thanks very much.

its hard for us over here to know what these people charge for a secondhand box, I think that I would try a secondhand one first.

Hi.

Had the same experience a couple of years ago, heard (and felt) a thump from the underside while travelling quite slowly near a junction. The car drove home OK, but on taking it out subsequently - no forward drive but would reverse OK. Called an autobox specialist acquaintance - "sheared anchor pin on No.(?) brakeband" or words close to those.
Got the usual quotes for recon. box etc., but ended up having a s/h unit fitted at a total cost of £500-ish.
Apparently the car would have driven far enough after this 'pin' sheared, but after stopping would lose forward drive.

Tom.
